Mawicke was an illustrator and painter who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. His client list was impressive and would be today as the majority of brands he worked for still exist (Add that he was once a president of the Society of Illustrators). I recently had the great pleasure of viewing these two portraits that he painted in 1947. The painter's facility with his media is enviable; great body, no overworking, even layering and very little evidence of noodling while working loosely but precisely. Not sure about the little halo over the woman's head but I suspect something in the paint caused one area to age more or less causing the separation that you see.
