pine island, georgia

Pine Island and Flora Hammock make up Little Wassaw (McIntosh County). Its history (written kind) starts with a black planter named Anthony Odingsell* (born in Chatham county). Not the norm in the 1800s, he owned the property and 11 slaves. (More here about his net worth.)

Also, reportedly, ten percent of all loggerheads traverse this land as they nest their eggs.

* Say AH-din-szell, not OH-ding-cell.

** And at this location, a great mystery (still unsolved); my husband suggests that the never found graves couldn't have been as the geology (elevation is approximately 1 meter) could not support their existing (at least for very long).
